In the early 1910 for a total of $1,200, Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker opened a small machine shop in Baltimore, Maryland that grew into the Black and Decker Power Tools company. Their first patent in 1916 for a ½” portable electric drill with a trigger switch and pistol grip revolutionized the industry by making power tools portable instead of stationary. It was not until 1946 and the DIY revolution that Black and Decker Power Tools started its Home Utility Line for consumers.
